I am sick

October 17th, 2007 by Ah Doe

If you have been following my posts, you’d know that I just whispered to all of you about my secret.

Perfect pitch is the ability of a person to identify or sing a musical note without benefit of a known reference (Quoted in Wikipedia). If that is too hard to understand, don’t worry, you are still normal.

Let’s imagine it this way:

In the movie Secret (不能说的秘密), Mr Zhan Yu Hao (詹宇豪) played Chopin’s Waltz Op.64 and Jay was able to repeat every exact note that he listened on the piano. By excluding the possibility that Jay memorized every notes of the song beforehand, it’s very probable that Jay (in the movie) possessed Perfect Pitch that enabled him to recognize musical notes without any given clues or key reference.

Yu Hao: Challenge me!!

When I was 6, a piano tuner accidentally discovered my gift and recommended my parents to send me for music lessons. Throughout all these years, I can’t explain why I am able to identify the key of a song and play them directly on the piano. I felt …GREAT….frankly, but got annoyed when I began to realize my weakness in the black keys.

Piano Keyboard

This indirectly led me to an inferior when songs with more black notes are played.

The good point is: I felt normal when I couldn’t identify the black notes when they are being played (By merely listening and not seeing them on the keyboard of course!) and I can perfectly understand others’ difficulties to transcribe a song on keyboard by listening.

The bad point is: I am totally allergic to key transposition. I remembered once, when I was the pianist for our school choir, I had to find suitable key of a song for our choir to sing. There wasn’t any acoustic piano but a small digital keyboard. In order to simplify the process, I tried to play the song on White Keys but someone transposed the original key to F# Major, which was a disaster for me! Why??? I knew the note that I played did not sound like it was supposed to sound!!

Imagine a Middle C sounds like F# when you played it? You wouldn’t know if you aren’t having perfect pitch…

Should I regret then?

Nope…it’s a plus and minus and I’ve already accepted it…

Ok, far drifted away from the topic….should tell you guys about my sickness…(Cough cough…)

One sweet day, feeling bored, I went to research Perfect Pitch in the Internet, hoping to get some information such as “What’s the chance of getting a perfect pitched baby”, “Famous person with such ability”, “Why am I partially perfect pitched (= not so perfect~)” and bla bla bla…

Ooooh….saw something and this was what had happened to me!!!!

What the…..

Perfect Pitch from Wikipedia

From Wikipedia…Williams Syndrome in the scene

Of course, I went to find out about the disorder and that is when I suspect myself having Williams Syndrome!

What’s that? Never heard of it before…

Turned out to be a rare genetic disorder that occurs in fewer than 1 in 7500 live births. Let’s check out the symptoms…

1) Autism (Concluded to be difficulty in understanding what people are talking to you)
2) Fetal alcohol syndrome (e.g. certain facial features, possible mental retardation, and negative potential outbursts)
3) Generally possess good social skills (Cocktail-party syndrome)
4) perfect-pitch symptom
5) Lack of depth perception (To me it’s a sort of poor logical thinking)
6) Linguistic Talent
7) Cardiological defects

Excluding 2 and 7, I think I fulfilled the rest! Although not too auspicious to say that I am sick, it’s still not a DOA matter. On the contrary, I actually think that being talented in language and music is not a bad thing after all!

What do you think?

Wait, are you still busy evaluating yourself with that checklist??
